Individual Life Coaching

Break through to who you want to be.

One on One Life Coach

Identify Goals

You may have a clear vision for your future, or you may simply know something needs to change. Together, we’ll sort through the mental clutter, identify what matters most, and clarify your goals for life and career.

Individual life coaching gives you space to think, recognize what’s holding you back, and choose a direction that feels meaningful to you.

Develop Tools

Once we know where you want to go, we’ll build a practical plan to help you get there. That might include organizing your schedule, breaking big goals into manageable steps, or establishing habits that support your priorities.

We’ll find tools that fit your everyday life, with regular check-ins to adjust your approach and help you follow through.

See Breakthrough

Breakthrough can happen in a defining moment or through small changes that build over time. As you put your plan into practice, we’ll recognize your progress, work through obstacles, and keep your daily actions connected to your bigger purpose.

The goal is to help you move forward with greater clarity, confidence, and tools you can continue using as life changes.

Your life,

improved

Getting started is often the hardest step because it means moving beyond what feels familiar, even when you know something needs to change.

You may feel unsure, overwhelmed, or worried about making the wrong decision. But you don’t need every answer to take one small step forward.

What is Life Coaching?

What is Individual Life Coaching

If you landed on this page, you’re probably not looking for another motivational quote or a generic self-help checklist. You’re looking for something real – a one-on-one partnership with an individual life coach who can help you cut through the noise, get clear on what you actually want, and start moving toward it with structure and accountability.

Life coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented partnership. Unlike therapy, it doesn’t treat mental health conditions or dig into clinical diagnoses. Instead, it focuses on present solutions, not past issues – where you want to go, what’s in the way, and how to build a plan that sticks. A professional life coach walks alongside you, helping you achieve goals that matter in your personal life and career.

Does Any of This Sound Like You Right Now?

You have a good life on paper. You’re competent, maybe even successful by most measures. But something feels off – a low-grade restlessness, a sense that you’re running hard without getting anywhere that feels meaningful. You’re not in crisis, but you’re not thriving either.

If any of the following sound familiar, you’re not alone:

  • You’re feeling stuck at a career crossroads and can’t decide whether to stay, pivot, or start something new

  • You lead a small Portland non-profit, but your own life feels chaotic and unsustainable

  • You overthink every major decision and second-guess yourself after making it

  • You sense untapped potential but can’t seem to unlock it on your own

  • You’ve been in the same role since 2017 and wonder if a career change would bring back your energy

  • You carry mental clutter – too many tabs open in your brain, not enough clarity on what matters most

  • You feel like you “should” be happier, more fulfilled, more confident than you are

  • You juggle a demanding professional role while your personal growth sits on the back burner

Clients report improved clarity and purpose through coaching. The goal isn’t to fix what’s broken – it’s to help you move from functional to optimal living.

What One-on-One Life Coaching Can Help You With

Every coaching engagement is tailored to you. You set the agenda, and together we work on what matters most. That said, there are common themes I work on with clients regularly.

Life coaching covers a range of areas such as career transitions, relationships, and personal development.

Direction and clarity:

  • Clarifying your calling, purpose, or next chapter

  • Building confidence in career choices and major life decisions

  • Defining professional goals that align with your values

Direction and clarity:

  • Clarifying your calling, purpose, or next chapter

  • Building confidence in career choices and major life decisions

  • Defining professional goals that align with your values

Work and leadership:

  • Navigating life transitions – new roles, career pivots, stepping into leadership

  • Burnout prevention and sustainable rhythms for non-profit leaders

  • Aligning daily work with long-term purpose and peak performance

Personal life and well being:

  • Setting and enforcing boundaries with family, colleagues, donors, or board members

  • Time management and regaining energy for things that matter

  • Developing new habits that support the life you actually want

Coaching builds self-awareness, accountability, and courage. It helps you identify obstacles – internal beliefs, external pressures, old patterns – and create strategies to move past them. It’s also a space where you can discover and trust your own voice, separate from the expectations of everyone around you. Life coaching can enhance emotional stability and resilience, which translates into better decisions and a more meaningful life.

Dan Abbott is a Portland Area Life Coach

Dan's Story: From Stuck to Breakthrough

For over a decade, I have worked inside the non-profit sector. I love the mission, but the reality is relentless: tight budgets, understaffed teams, constant pressure to deliver more with less. In 2016, I hit a wall. I was effective on the outside but running on fumes on the inside – reactive, scattered, and unclear about where my own life was headed.

That year, I hired a personal life coach. It changed everything.

  • My coach helped me organize my workflow so I stopped drowning in tasks and started working with intention

  • I cleared the mental clutter that made every decision feel heavy

  • I connected my daily actions with my long-term purpose – something I’d lost sight of entirely

  • I shifted from reactive survival mode to intentional, forward-looking living

That coaching experience sparked a deep calling. I realized I wanted to provide that exact same breakthrough for others – especially people in mission-driven roles who pour themselves out for others and forget to invest in their own direction.

What a Session with a Professional Life Coach Actually Feels Like

This is not a lecture. It’s not a pep talk. And it’s definitely not someone telling you how to live your life.

A coaching session is a safe space – confidential, judgment-free, and entirely focused on what matters to you. I listen deeply, reflect what I hear, and ask questions designed to get beneath the surface. The goal is to help you think more clearly, not to hand you a script.

Here’s the typical flow of a 60-minute session:

  • Check-in: What’s happened since last session? Wins, challenges, surprises.

  • Choose a focus: You pick the topic that needs attention today.

  • Explore: We dig in using questions, reflection, and sometimes specific tools – values clarification, strengths mapping, or simple planning frameworks

  • Identify obstacles: What’s getting in the way – internally (beliefs, fear, perfectionism) or externally (time, resources, relationships)?

  • Co-design action: We set 1–3 realistic steps or experiments to try before next session.

  • Clarity and accountability: What will you commit to? What support do you need? What does “done” look like?

I balance encouragement with challenge. When clients avoid important decisions, I offer gentle but honest client feedback. Guiding clients forward means sometimes naming what’s being left unsaid. Life coaching is typically a shorter-term process than therapy, but it’s deep, focused work that creates positive change when you show up for it.

Ready for Your Breakthrough? Take the Next Step

If what you’ve read here resonates – if you’re tired of spinning and ready for forward movement – the next step is straightforward.

  • Schedule your free 30-minute Discovery Conversation. Choose a time that fits your schedule, and complete a brief pre-call form so I understand your situation before we talk.

  • No long-term commitment required. The first step is simply a conversation to explore fit and possibilities.

  • Consider this: Where do you want to be 90 days from now? What would it feel like to have clarity, a plan, and someone in your corner holding you accountable to the future you actually want?

Life coaches provide the structure, support, and challenge that make the difference between staying stuck and stepping into something better. You don’t need to have it all figured out before you reach out – that’s what the conversation is for.

Ninety days from today, you could be operating with a level of clarity and momentum you haven’t felt in years. It starts with one call.
